Nurturing a team

Thanks to the additional power from Tejit's semantic analysis engine, and its having raised $1.3 million last year from KPG Ventures, SezWho is now all set to position itself as a leader in its field. Indus Khaitan, Tejit's founder and CEO, now heads SezWho's technology and engineering operations.

Khaitan's development team consists of five engineers in Bangalore who crank out applications using the latest technologies, and tools like PHP, Ajax, Memcached, OpenID, OAuth, Amazon EC2 and MySQL. He encourages his team at every step by fostering a culture of innovation. How exactly does he do that? "I don't pigeon hole the development team. Everybody works on everything-- not to create a mess, but to participate in a fruitful discussion. The developers get to write code in areas of their interest. We have let people work on unproven areas and found that it has been a success. The only accountability the development team has is to deliver the software and bug-free code. Most engineers have at least 2 to 3 work streams open. From time to time, they also connect directly with customers on support issues. We also reward them with hot gadgets and big screen TVs (we just gave a big screen TV to a Bangalore team member). Recently, all the developers got a new iPod for their contributions to a successful software release," says Khaitan.

Valuable lessons (see box) indeed, for any technopreneur seeking to motivate a development team. Khaitan has undoubtedly come a long way since conceiving Tejit. Nevertheless, he believes that, "Internet content discovery is still in its nascent stages. The index size of the top search engines is pegged at 30 billion pages. Finding relevant content is still a challenge. Algorithms have evolved and so has the WWW. Even with Google, we never go beyond 2 to 3 pages of search results, though quality content still lurks there. All said and done, this is what motivated me to take the plunge into solving a part of the problem."

But all is still far from done. Khaitan has a clear vision of his future role at SezWho. "At SezWho, I'm going to manage day-to-day engineering operations (which include daily Skype calls with the Bangalore team!) and product architecture, without giving up the hands-on coding from time-to-time. I'm also trying to get my hands into a few committees around portability of user generated content."

Will this involvement yield something bigger and better in the field of searching and making the most out of user generated content on the Web? Who knows, another start-up may lie just round the corner!
